John Wall Picked First Overall by Wizards in 2010 NBA Draft

John Wall was selected first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft, surprisingly absolutely no one. Wall has been pegged as 2010's surefire top pick for months, and the Wizards never suggested they would seriously consider anyone else for the selection. Wall is considered by some to be the best prospect to enter the league since Kevin Durant in 2007, and the best point guard since Chris Paul and Deron Williams in 2005.

Wall, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Raleigh, N.C., is the first player from the University of Kentucky to be the NBA's top pick. Kentucky has landed two previous No. 2 picks: Alex Groza in 1949, and Sam Bowie in 1984. The Wizards last picked first overall in 2000, when the team selected center Kwame Brown straight out of high school.

Wall's selection marks the third year in a row in which a point guard who played college ball for John Calipari landed in the top four picks. The last two -- Bulls No. 1 pick Derrick Rose and Kings No. 4 pick Tyreke Evans -- won the NBA's Rookie of the Year award.

Wall is expected to join embattled two-time All-Star Gilbert Arenas in the Wizards' backcourt. Arenas has played point guard his entire pro career, but will be expected to slide over to off-guard to make way for Wall. Arenas was suspended for 50 games last season due to an incident involving guns in the Verizon Center locker room. Arenas is still owed $80 million over the next four seasons.

Other veterans Wall will join in D.C. include power forward Andray Blatche, shooting guard Nick Young, center JaVale McGee and small forward Al Thornton. The Wizards have roughly $20 million in cap space to use on free agents or in trades this summer. Free agency begins July 1.

The Wizards also hold the rights to the No. 30 and No. 35 picks.

CJ Leslie, a senior at Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, joined the ranks of basketball's elite today with his selection to the prestigious 2010 McDonald's All American High School Basketball Boys Team. Leslie's participation in the Games will help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Ohio, which supports local children and families in need.

Leslie was named to the East squad, and will play with 23 other top male high school basketball players in the country. He joins Reggie Bullock as the only two North Carolinians on the team. Leslie currently averages 22 point per game, and he leads the Word of God Christian Academy Holy Rams in points along with rebounds and assists per game. His coach at Word of God Christian Academy is Erasto Hatchett, and his parents are Calvin and Lisa Leslie.

"We're very excited to have a talented athlete from our community as part of the McDonald's All American Team," said Gary Thill, McDonald's owner/operator in Leslie's hometown of Raleigh. "We look forward to being a part of a special celebration for CJ to congratulate him and tell him how proud we are of him." More details on celebration plans will be shared in the next two weeks.

The Boys Game will tip off at 8:00 p.m. ET, Wednesday, March 31, at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio and will air live on ESPN. The Girls Game will get underway at 5:30 p.m. ET and will broadcast live on ESPNU.
